Summary0000664: The difference between Android O and P about IPv6 IP address
DescriptionSKB uses some application, "Btv plus", on the Phone.
It uses Mac Address. But it doesn't receive Mac address from STB.
So Btv Plus application get MAC Address from IPv6 IP address.
It works well on Android O.
But it doesn't work on Android P.
So SKB asked us the difference between OS version.

For you information,
    Legacy Android O STB

Hi Jacky,
Please confirm if this issue is caused by Android P's error and Google has any plan to fix it.
We need your feedback on this, to start discussing about the 2nd plan with other partners.
Thanks.

˙Android (Linux kernel) change the default IPv6 address generation algorithm from the Modified EUI-64 format (that embeds MAC addresses RFC4941) to the privacy-enhanced RFC7217 scheme (Stable Privacy Addresses Implementation).
˙Since the old algorithm EUI-64 have a number of drawbacks in security, IPv6 address will be used as a secret to generate IPv6 addresses for link-local addresses and autoconfigured ones.
˙RFC7217: A Method for Generating Semantically Opaque Interface Identifierswith IPv6 Stateless Address Autoconfiguration (SLAAC)

Hi Gary,

SKB have checked RFC 4941, and understand the change for IPv6 address generation algorithm.
So they are now planning to modify IPv6 address generation method to solve this issue.
But they has asked us to check with Google if this new solution has no risk.
Could you help to check this request, and ask Google if needed?

The following function is called when IPv6 starts in Android.
And if modifying it like below, they think that MAC address can be extracted.

"startIPv6()" in android/frameworks/base/services/net/java/android/net/ip/IpClient.java

[As-Is]
private boolean startIPv6()
{ return mInterfaceCtrl.setIPv6PrivacyExtensions(true) && mInterfaceCtrl.setIPv6AddrGenModeIfSupported(mConfiguration.mIPv6AddrGenMode) && mInterfaceCtrl.enableIPv6(); }

[To-Be]
private boolean startIPv6()
{ return mInterfaceCtrl.setIPv6PrivacyExtensions(false) && mInterfaceCtrl.setIPv6AddrGenModeIfSupported(INetd.IPV6_ADDR_GEN_MODE_EUI64) && mInterfaceCtrl.enableIPv6(); }

[Expected Result]
console:/ #
console:/ # ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:09:74:00:22:e7 Driver mvneta

Jewoo,
We understood why SKB would modify ipv6 link-local address as EUI-64, and you can close this case.

Google would not confirm what is the risk to ipv6 address modification,
because Android is open source and SKB can modify any source at their own.

Hi Gary,

   Which SW version will you apply the change which was proposed by SKB ?
